USS Constitution

Old Ironsides

Nautical chart art print of the USS Constitution from an original watercolor painting on a Boston Harbor nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The USS Constitution is a wooden-hulled, three-mast heavy frigate of the United States Navy.   She was named by President George Washington in honor of the USS Constitution.    She was built by Edmund Hartt’s shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts, launched in 1797 and the third of six frigates authorized by the Naval act of 1794. Her first duties were to provide protection American shipping and defeat the Barbary pirates.   During the war of 1812 the Constitution battery consisted of 30 long 24-pounder cannons (15 on each side of the gun deck), 22 short pounder cannons on the spar deck (11 per side) and 2 chase guns on the stern and bow.  The USS Constitution became famous for her actions during the War of 1812 against Great Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships. The battle with the defeated HMS Guerriere earned her the nickname of "Old Ironsides" and public support that saved her from being scrapped in the future.   On September 14, 1830, an article appeared in the Boston Advertiser claiming the Navy might scrap the Constitution because she was in need of a major overhaul. Oliver Wendell Holmes then published in the paper the famous poem “Old Ironsides” which caused a huge public effort to save and later restore the USS Constitution. She continued to serve as a flagship circling the world, training ship during the Civil war, and carried artwork/displays to the Paris Exposition in 1878.  Retired from active service in 1881 she served as a receiving ship until designated as a museum ship in 1907. Today the Constitution is a fully commissioned Navy ship and the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat.  There is a crew of 60 sailors and officers on the ship and considered a huge honor.  Old Ironsides sailed under her own power for her 200th birthday in 1997 and again in August 2012.  She is berthed at pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard.

William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts.
