Antique Tall Cut Glass Zipper Trumpet Vase ABP American Brilliant Period Description:  Clear vase with gold gilt hand painted design.   12.5" tall x 4" outside top diameter x 4.5" bottom diameter.    * This vase is more unique  and rare  because of the prism zipper cuts that run up the vase, thus eliminating  the usual and common add-ons of cut hobstars, fans, pinwheels, buzzstars, or other cross-hatching shapes which normally adorn these vases.   Condition:  EXCELLENT, beautiful piece. No cracks or major flaws--there is a tiny chip or flea bite on the very bottom of the base--it's hard to see, as it is on the bottom, and I don't think it detracts from the overall beauty of this piece. See pictures # 12, 13, and 14 for details.   This is an antique  and therefore selling as such in used  condition, but you will be hard-pressed to acquire a finer example of fine handcrafted early American artistry in a vase of this type. It truly is spectacular and special.   *******************************************   American Brilliant Period (ABP)  cut glass is fine quality, hand-cut crystal produced from 1876 to roughly 1920. It is considered “crystal” because it comprised up to a 50% lead content (versus 24% for modern crystal), which accounted for its brilliance.   It has three distinguishing characteristics: a bell-like ring when gently tapped with the finger, a clarity and brilliance unmatched by pressed or molded imitations, and weight noticeably greater than the same sized piece made of unleaded glass.   During this period, American cut glass companies were producing items that were superior to any in the world, items that embodied a standard of quality and craftsmanship. Intricate geometric patterns that reflected a rainbow of colors is applied to everything imaginable, from small crystal goblets and dishes to grand punch bowls and decanters.   The onset of World War I signaled the end of American glassmaking. Lead that had given cut glass its signature luminance was now needed to make bullets for war. Cut glass wares fell out of vogue as society looked towards less expensive and ornate decor in the face of hard economic times, and by 1920, the last of the great manufacturers had closed their doors forever.   *****************************************
